§ 40-565. Water warning declaration and criteria.

  • (a)

    Declaration of a water warning. The mayor, upon the recommendation of the director of public works, may impose a water warning under the criteria set forth below. Such a water warning shall continue until it is determined that it is no longer necessary in order to maintain a sustainable water system. Under a water warning the mayor is authorized to implement mandatory lawn watering restrictions. Mandatory lawn watering restrictions may apply to all customers or customers on alternate sides of the street. They may be for all day or for specified times each day. Mandatory restrictions may also prohibit establishment of new lawns, either sodded or seeded. Notice of a water warning shall be given to the common council and major news media that serve the city as well as mailed to each customer.

    (b)

    Criteria for a water warning.

    (1)

    To avoid sustained low pressure;

    (2)

    To maintain reservoir levels above preset fire reserve limits as determined by the utility if a Water Watch does is not effective;

    (3)

    To compensate for a loss of one or more wells or towers; or

    (4)

    To maintain a sustainable aquifer.
